About the show
Queer cabaret like no other: the interplay of glamour, tragedy, satire and risk taking
The Bowery Theatre recognises the late Leigh Bowery who was born and raised in the West and went on to become one of the most influential international arts figures of the 80s and 90s. Like Leigh, the Glitter and Doom Salon represents avant-garde performance art, music and visual art in the provocateur genre.
Equal parts glamorous cabaret salon and debauched dive bar, The Glitter and Doom Salon is a live performance experience like no other.
A star of the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it was described by audiences as “the hot, slightly androgynous, dark and intensely alluring new kid on the block when it comes to cabaret”, the Salon features Australia’s most enigmatic cabaret stars and vibrant vaudeville artists.
Inspired by the title of Tom Waits’ last live album, The Glitter & Doom Salon delves into the essence of cabaret artistry: the interplay of glamour, tragedy, satire and risk taking. It equally serves as a heartfelt homage to the music of Waits himself, an artist beloved by the contemporary cabaret scene and one of the all-time great songwriters of the dive bar/theatre circuit.
Expect performances of the most glitter-filled and doom-inspired kind, alongside performances of Tom Waits classics by emcee, performer and broadcaster Jennifer Kingwell.
Full event program – including exhibitions and events, will be announced in the coming days…
